It’s not uncommon to have teeth sensitivity or burning gums after teeth whitening. There are techniques and products to help reduce the discomfort that some people experience during teeth whitening.
You want to use custom fit whitening trays. Custom whitening trays help to keep the whitening gel away from the gums, since the trays are custom fit less whitening gel is needed.
Quality gel: You want to buy quality gel that is made in the USA. There should be an MSDS sheet available for the whitening gel.
You want to fill the trays correctly. Over filling is the most common cause of sensitivity and white burning gums. When using custom whitening gel you want to use around .5ml per tray. A small bread should be applied on the lower front of the teeth.
Wipe away extra gel. If any gel does come on the gums you want to wipe it away as quickly as possible. A q-tip or tissue can be used.
Whitening Time: You only need to wear your trays for 10-15 mins. The gel loses its effectiveness after about 15 mins.
Remineralization (remin) gel will help to relieve any “zing” or burning sensation after whitening. After whitening you want to rinse and dry the whitening trays. The remin gel can then be placed in the whitening tray.
If you are still experience discomfort there is lower percentage whitening gels available. It will take longer to reach your desired whiteness, but will not cause as much tooth sensitivity.
Here are some factors on why your whitening gel isn’t working.
1. Quality of the Gel: Not all gel is equal. You want to make sure you have quality gel that is purchased from the USA and has a MSDS sheet (material safety data sheet). This shows the ingredients and that it is coming for a reputable manufacture.
2. Storage conditions: Whitening gel is susceptible to heat and direct sunlight. Before you received your whitening gel it might have been exposed to extreme heat while being shipped on a cargo ship, train, or truck. Make sure that you are buying from a reputable seller who knows how the gel got to them from the manufacturer.
3. Teeth Shade: All teeth will whiten, but teeth have a natural color that they will max out at. When you see some celebrities with extremely white teeth they most likely have veneers on top of their natural teeth.
4. Life Span: Some whitening gels only have a shelf life of 6 months. The whitening gel might have been in a warehouse or in storage months before you received the gel. SportingSmiles whitening gel has a 2 year shelf life and is purchased every month directly from the manufacturer.
This type of tray is made from an exact impression of your teeth and made in a dental lab.
First you want to brush your teeth.
Place a small bead of gel in the front lower tooth compartment of the whitening trays. You want to use about .5ml per tray.
Make sure that the teeth are dry. This is a trick that helps the whitening gel to be more effective.
Place tray on the teeth. If there is any excess whitening gel coming in contact with the gums you want to remove this with your finger or a cloth. At this time the whitening gel will start to bubble. This is normal and some of the bubbling may require spitting to remove.
You should only whiten for about 20 minutes once a day. After about 20 minutes the whitening gel loses its strength and continuing use will do very little.
When whitening your teeth for the first time you can increase by shades extremely quickly. After your teeth get moderately white it takes longer to increase shade levels. Make sure that you have good quality gel that is fresh and hasn’t been exposed to heat or direct sunlight. Whitening gel can be exposed to heat or sunlight while being shipped from the manufacture to the distributor, and while it’s being stored before being sold. You want to research where you are buying from to make sure you are getting quality gel. To extend the life span of your whitening gel storing in a refrigerator is recommended.
There are many ways to whiten your teeth. You can visit a dentist and they can whiten your teeth in the office or you can save money and whiten them at home.
When you whiten your teeth in the dentist office they will apply a block out dam on to your gums and apply 44% or higher whitening gel to your teeth. Then they will use a UV light that accelerates the whitening process. It normally takes about an hour and you will see immediate change in your tooth shade. The issue is that this normally only last a few months and your teeth will start to darken again.
I prefer the whiten at home method. The best way to whiten your teeth is to have custom whitening trays made. These are made just for you and your mouth, preventing the whitening gel from going everywhere. The advantage is that the trays will last forever; you just need to get extra whitening gel when you need a touch up. You can also purchase 35% gel for a low price. This is a lot easier that having to make another appointment with your dentist and spending a lot more money. I recommend the custom whitening tray made in a dental lab, but there are also thermo-form trays that you can make at home using boiling water. These work but are less comfortable and you end up using a lot more whitening gel because the gel goes all over.
If you are looking to whiten, I recommend spending a little money and get custom made whitening trays that will last for years. www.SportingSmiles.com
